Lego Revival

Iconic retro brands possess strong currency right now. The latest hails not from the annals of fashion or apparel but from the world of toys - we're talking about LEGO, the multi-coloured building bricks that we all grew up with. While LEGO is still one of the top children's toy brands, it is spontaneously morphing into a credible street brand, adopted by Gen Y hipsters who still nurture happy memories of playing with the blocks as kids. It's part of a bigger trend, which has seen other iconic mostly 80s brands such as Reebok enjoy unexpected revivals.

LEGO has been appearing in all sorts of unlikely applications from watches to cameras, bags and belts, to usb sticks, mobile phones and even cupcakes. Our favourites include a recent ad for hot fashion house Lanvin, which used colour-spray guns made from LEGO in a recent campaign and adorable LEGO fashion show video by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac which cast LEGO figures as fabulous high fashion catwalk models.

We can only imagine what will be next. Lego for Louis Vuitton, perhaps? Marc Jacobs bags and Lego - a match made in heaven. Or LEGO sunglasses - it's a cult hit waiting to happen. - Laura Demasi

Msgm - Italy

When you think Italian fashion design, Armani, Valentino and Versace spring to mind, having paved the way for strong, bold aesthetics. Quality and tailoring is also intrinsic to the Italian sensibility. A new label that epitomises both has emerged from a 20-year strong lineage. Italian company “Paoloni Group” launched a new label “MSGM” recently with strong acceptance domestically and internationally with the likes of Harvey Nichols, Joyce, Lane Crawford, Matches and Browns plus being named as one of the best new emerging designers for Vogue Talents.

Created by and for a youthful demographic of under 35, the label has both a men’s and women’s collection. Blending comfort and function with a distinctly Italian preppy edge, the Men’s collection is fresh and modern yet combines achingly simple pieces together. The Women’s is more fashion focused with an emphasis on print and staying current to the season. Either way, this is one label to watch as they make their mark on the international fashion scene. – Kate Vandermeer

Karl Lagerfeld X Pirelli " Mythology" Calender Launch

Karl Lagerfeld recently unveiled the latest iteration of Pirelli’s ongoing series of calendars. Photographed by Lagerfeld himself, the calendar is comprised of 36 black & white images over 15 female models and 5 male models. Models are based on various mythical personalities such as gods and goddesses. The calendar is being unveiled at the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow. Excerpts from an interview on the collaboration can be see below.
Frédéric Beigbeder: What made you choose the theme of Greek and Roman mythology?
Karl Lagerfeld: Because it’s my favourite religion: one god for every occasion. I’m a polytheist: allpresent-day religions are recent, but I prefer this mythology, which does without hell, without sin (anobstacle to happiness), and without forgiveness. We need to return to the disciplined form of beautyof Antiquity. Simone Weil said that Jesus was a direct descendant of Prometheus – which caused ascandal at the time. I love the goddesses, because they were the first emancipated women. They hada right to everything. The female divinities and the Muses are feminists!
When does your fascination with the myths of Antiquity date back to?
The first two books I read, when I was six, were Homer’s Iliad and the Nibelung. While theGermanic stories frightened me, Homer had a huge influence on me – it’s my educational source. What’s so brilliant about ancient paganism is that there are lots of gods, the spirits move around, andthere are heroes, demigods, genii, and nymphs… Humans were much closer to the gods than they arein the monotheistic religions. In those days I had no idea that I myself would become a god!! (laughs)
Before you were chosen by Pirelli for this 2011 edition, did you know about the Pirelli calendar?
Yes, especially the one by Avedon (1995), which I adored. It was erudite, but also sexy andsimple. I’m also a fan of Sarah Moon – she was the first to show her breast at the age of 72. Sheemanates great poetry.
What does Pirelli mean to you?
It’s a tyre manufacturer that made an image for itself with these calendars – you can’t buy them, and this gives them an aura of mystery. It’s a form of viral marketing way ahead of its time. When theystarted, they made them for mechanics and truck drivers! But they soon became landmarks in the artworld.
Why the black background?
I find it enhances the nude; it highlights the beauty of the body through contrast.
Why black and white rather than colour?
A bit of black and white was refreshing, and it made a change from my illustrious predecessors, and in real life I’m a black-and-white person myself!

Interview Magazine : RIHANNA by Kanye West

Interview Magazine has just launched this short bio on Barbadian pop-sensation Rihanna, alongside an interview with the star, conducted by 14-time Grammy winner, Kanye West. Clearly familiar with one another, the interview is piloted in a relaxed fashion but manages to penetrate beyond the surface reached by most interviews. Discussing a range of interviews from the public perception of Rhianna, to her personal fashion style, don’t be surprised to also find snippets of info about West himself. Key excerpts from the interview can be seen below.

KANYE WEST: Whuzup?

RIHANNA: Hey. How are you?
I’m good. I’m just out here in this retarded-ass studio- Peter Gabriel’s studio.
Where? In London?
Yeah. Like two hours out.
That’s dope. You-all working on the new album?
Yeah. Well, it’s a me and Jay album. Right now, I’m sitting here going through some Lex Luger beats. This whole album, Watch The Throne, is going to be very dark and sexy- like very couture hip-hop. Because since me and Jay have already had big records and over-the-top joints, we’re just going to make some real dirty, fucked-up, hardcore stuff. But it’s also luxe and definitely high-class. So let’s start with my favorite thing. Rihanna, what’s your take on fashion? How has it evolved since the start of your career?
Well, I would say that in the beginning of my career, I didn’t have a lot of input in what I wore and stuff, but it was a very, innocent, girly look. Then after we put out Good Girl Gone Bad, it kind of became a darker, edgier look, and then it got even edgier on the last album [Rated R]. And now it’s just . . . I’m over the whole structured clothing, overly shoulder-padded shit. I like stuff that’s easy without trying too hard. I don’t like stuff that’s too contrived.
So what’s your next look? Where do you see yourself a year from now?
I probably see a lot of menswear, or something extremely, extremely feminine. But I like to play with both. It would have to be so extreme that it’s a look, because I don’t usually like typical ladylike, girly-girly stuff. It would be a look if I were to do it. I always like something that’s a little off, so it’s just not typical or expected.
When you make songs, do you think about what you’re going to wear when you’re performing them? Does it directly relate to the music in that way?
I think not so much about what I’m going to wear yet, but when I make songs or make music, I do always think about the video. The video always plays in my head while I’m listening to the song.
So why did you call your new album Loud?
Because I feel like it was a really fun, expressive album, and loud was the perfect word to symbolize that. It’s aggressive at times, but in a really fun way-just the overall energy of it. Even the energy when we were making the album was really expressive and rebellious, but fun. We had fun the whole time. And you hear it when you listen to the songs. They feel really good.
Do you have a vulnerable side? Because in a lot of the singles that come out, you’re like, “What’s my name, muthafucka?” or “I’m a murderer.”
Yes, I do have a vulnerable side. I think a lot of people have a misperception of me. They only see the tough, defensive, aggressive side. But every woman is vulnerable. They have vulnerability. So of course I’m going to have that side. It’s not a major part of who I am, but it’s definitely there. I just don’t like people to see me cry-I don’t like to let them know when I’m bothered. You know? I just prefer it to be all about business, and then whatever I’m dealing with, let me deal with that alone, because I don’t want it to affect anything in my professional life.
So a year from now, Rihanna could have a little shorty with little high-tops? [Rihanna laughs] What will Rihanna’s kids be like?
If I had a girl, she’d probably be really rebellious. She would be like a bundle of karma.
